How to Make a Simple Candle Chandelier

July 4, 2011 – This will be a project that sees you mostly use materials you have around the home to make a simple but beautiful candle chandelier. Before we begin, let’s list down the objects we can use as the main piece which acts as the chandeliers’ body:

There’s no restriction to what you can use as long as it is a light object which we can easily place our candles on and hang up. Since a small birdcage is rather easy to come by, let us make our candle chandelier using one:

Materials

Small birdcage

An “S” hook

2 Small metal candle holders or even tiny flat metal cups if you have some in your kitchen

A metal cutter

Light-use welder

Some paint

Making the chandelier

1. Take your birdcage and using the metal cutters, cut off alternative grills on the cage as well as the centre bar so that you’re left with open spaces after every two or three grills depending on how large you want the spaces to be. Cut out all the grills from the door so it’s completely “hollow”.  For the floor, cut out part of it and leave a strip measuring about an inch or two in diameter running across the middle.

2. Weld off the rough edges of the cut grills and smooth them out to avoid scratches and cuts to your hand.

3. Paint the birdcage over with the paint you picked out then leave it to dry.

4. As the cage dries, drive your “S” hook into the ceiling.

5. Take your small metal candle holders and place them inside the strip left of the floor of the cage with the candles inside them and hang the cage up on the hook.

Voila! Your very own homemade candle chandelier! These same techniques and tips can help you gain experience so that you can create other lights such as hurricane lamps and bathroom vanity lights.
